JAWS
The 25th Anniversary Documentary
Trip Details

Trip Date: June 10th-14th, 2000

Lets start at the beginning. Somewhere near the beginning of 1999, there were several regulars from the "JAWS forum", which is part of the old jawsmovie.com, who started talking about a 25th Anniversary 'Jaws Fest 2000' on Martha's Vineyard. It was talked about for a while, and a list of prospective people were chosen. Alas, only a few ended up confirming, and Rich Boluk contacted me. He is a videographer/editor, and he got wind that I was too, so we decided to be the co-producers of this documentary.

We then compiled a list of all the people we could find that were in some way involved in the shooting of Jaws. Carl Gottieb's book, as well as Edith Blake's were great sources of information. We were surprised to find out that the majority of people mentioned in the books were residents of Martha's Vineyard. So that, combined with research from sources such as the Internet Movie Database, led us to start getting in contact with these people, and asking them if they would be interested in interviewing on camera.

Well, as Summer 2000 got closer, the forum members started dropping off like flies (you know who you are!), and the list dwindled down to me (Clarke), Rich Boluk, Katrina, Michael Simms, and his girlfriend Jenny. Jawsovie.com's Jake and his spouse were almost able to make it, but then couldn't. Jaws Fest 2000 became just the 5 of us. But that turned out OK. We did get a lot of interviews, and there was no way more people could have joined.

Here then, is a copy of the research and planning that went into this documentary…

Purpose and Outline

1. A Look Back

Jaws was shot on Martha's Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts. We are going to take a tour of all the locations used in the film, and compare them to how they looked in 1975. Features and entertaining 'before and after' using the same camera angles and partial scene recreations (minus actors).

2. Cast and Crew
Many people have seen the Making of Jaws featured on the laser disc, and the 25th anniversary DVD. We do not intend to go over the same territory as that documentary. For one thing, we do not have the capability of interviewing above-the-line cast and crew, such as Spielberg, Dreyfuss, etc. Our interviews will consist of locals from the island, many of whom still live there and were involved but were not actors or trained film crew personnel. A list of some of those people follow:

1. Jay Mello (played Sean Brody)
2. Chris Rebello (played Michael Brody) works for the Ferry company in West Tisbury
3. Lyn Murphy (he worked on the film extensively; owns the Fighting chair from the Orca, Quint's fishing rod, and what's left of the weather destroyed Orca II
4. Craig Kingsbury (Ben Gardner)
5. Lee Fiero (Mrs. Kitner)
6. Edith Blake (wrote The Making of the Movie Jaws, and has several unpublished behind the scenes photos.

3. The Fans
Lastly, we will cover the following of loyal Jaws fans from around the world, who keep the website forum alive and well, and who have traveled to the island to celebrate the 25th anniversary. Many of them have gotten to know each other via the site. We will interview them, and show highlights from the 'Jaws Party'!
One final thing: Planned, and on-the-spot attempts will be made to reach the general public to find out if we can find anyone who was involved in the making of the film. We want the John Q. Public's, people who probably have interesting little stories which have never been recorded before in the history of Jaws. These things would be worth preserving on video, before these people are lost to us (most are probably getting on in age after all). Also, it is our intention to seek out any candid photos the locals may have taken during production, to compile a kind of archive and eventually present it to a film institute for preservation.
